VERSION 11

Back to Tesla Coils Index

The old version 5 Tesla coil was completely rebuilt after I got some 6" PVC, which is hard to find. I unwound all the 23 gauge wire from the version 5 secondary and rewound it on the 6" PVC, and I also used up the remaining 23-gauge wire on my spool on this secondary. The stubby secondary is more efficient than a long and slender secondary.

Below is the schematic diagram of version 11 tesla coil.

Nothing special here, however a safety gap and some chokes would be safer when used in a large tesla coil.

Specifications
Primary: 17 turns of 0.25" copper tubing, 0.2" spacing.
Secondary: 23-gauge magnet wire 6" diameter PVC, 28 inches from bottom to top of windings.
Spark Gap: Single vacuum ("sucker" gap) spark gap, 1-inch copper pipes about 0.25 inches apart.
Capacitor: One huge 0.01uF 25kV capacitor from Condenser Products Corporation (capacitor was from the 1980s or so)
Toroid: Aluminium dryer duct

The resonant frequency is roughly 130KHz for this Tesla coil. The vacuum motor came from a quite expensive Hoover vacuum cleaner that was tossed out in the garbage. The case was made to be more permanent and stable compared to the original version 5 coil. The original could easily fall apart if someone accidently knocked it over. The new one is much more sturdy, yet the secondary can still be easily removed.

The sparks appear like those produced by the version 5 Tesla coil, but they are about 3 feet long. I did not include any pictures of the sparks here.
