VERSION 3

Back to Tesla Coils Index

A wacky attempt; a tiny tesla coil. Although this tesla coil doesn't make impressive arcs, I only intended to use it to light up a neon bulb for a small plasma globe display. Below is the schematic diagram of the tiny tesla coil. NOTE: The power supply is separate.

Version 3 Specifications:
Primary: 1 turn
Secondary: ? turns, 1.5 inches in length from top to bottom, #50-70 gauge magnet wire
Spark Gap: About .3mm to .5mm wire gap.
Capacitor: 500 pF ceramic disc, 15KV rating
Input V: From 1kV to 2kV
Output V: About 4KV

I used an oscilloscope transformer for the power supply, which generates about 1kV. However, the current is too high so I added a 1M ohm resistor in series. The large 15kV disc capacitor was salvaged from an old electric fence transformer. The coil is somewhere from 50 to 70 gauge, very thin. I used a 1-inch diameter PVC pipe. Excluding the neon bulb, the tesla coil assembly measures about 3.75 inches high by 2 inches long by 1.75 inches wide.
