VERSION 6 - VTTC
Back to Tesla Coils Index
This tube tesla coil was built inside a CPU power supply unit. I first built this VTTC on my workbench using components and jumpers for connections. The version 6 VTTC uses one 4X150, which apparently draws a lot of power from the poor oscilloscope transformer. The discharge length is almost 2 times longer and brighter than my first VTTC (version 4). A lightbulb clearly shows that this VTTC has more power than previous version. The power supply is simple, a oscilloscope transformer and one high voltage diode. The high voltage supply is about 1kV at about 10mA (half-wave DC), and the filament supply is 6.3VAC. The circuit is my design, and I'm not sure if it is the best or proper design although the design produced good results. The unique thing about this design is the lack of capacitors. I believe this circuit is called a pierce oscillator, but I might be wrong. Below is the schematic diagram of my version 6 VTTC tesla coil.

Parts List/Specifications
V1 - 4X150
D1 - High voltage diode
R1 - 20M ohms, 1W
R2 - 5 ohms, ~15W
L1 - 25 turns 23 gauge above L2 on 4-inch PVC pipe
L2 - 20 turns 24 gauge below L1 on 4-inch PVC pipe
L3 - About 285 turns 24 gauge on 2-inch PVC pipe - 6 inches from bottom to top
T1 - 1kV, 6.3V power transformer (old oscilloscope transformer)
The discharge length generated by this VTTC is about a half inch long.
