Sony PCG-N505VX

1999

The Sony VAIO PCG-N505VX, released in 1999, was an ultra-slim notebook designed for portability without sacrificing functionality. It featured a Pentium II 400 MHz processor, 64 MB SDRAM (expandable to 128 MB), and a 6.4 GB hard drive shipping with Windows 98. The laptop included a 10.4-inch TFT display, a nearly full-size tactile keyboard, and a digital touchpad, enhancing usability. Connectivity options included a V.90 56K modem, USB port, and i.LINK (IEEE-1394) interface, allowing for DV editing and data transfer. The PCG-N505VX was bundled with a double-capacity battery, port replicator, and external USB floppy drive.

I was given this laptop in circa 2008 during my time as a student at Rice University. I upgraded it to Windows XP and used it for taking notes in a few of my classes because it was small, lightweight and still usable despite its age. I would later upgrade from this computer to a Dell Inspirion Mini in 2009.
